Research Statement

A carefully elaborated set of models and model fragments describing possible scenarios and procedures in Smart Environments is essential for a foresighted user support, both as regards the control of devices and the visualization of the current system states as well of possible following states. Task models have proved their suitability as a description method for that purpose. They are able to specify collaborative work, which is an essential characteristic of activities in Smart Environments.

The research focuses on a scenario based construction of task models as a combination of task analysis and model induction. The resulting models will be improved by using patterns and will later serve as a starting point for the development of design models and the investigation of different interaction techniques to control the degree of support the user experiences in the Smart Environment. Usability evaluations can base on and refer to the task models being a communication aid for designers, developers and evaluators as well as users.
